Does Your Facility Comply with Sign Regulations?
Life is complicated for individuals
living with a disability. For some, physical activity is
limited. Others have vision and hearing impairments. Regardless
of the disability, navigating a school or hospital should not be
one more challenge these individuals have to overcome.
A clear and powerful message was sent
to the American people in 1990 when Congress passed the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which required thousands
of public facilities all over the country to adhere to strict
ADA signage regulations, among other things. ADA signage is
defined in the ADA regulations as “displayed verbal, symbolic,
tactile (Braille) and pictorial information.”

Go Modular: Go Green
Because there is a
growing awareness of the environmental benefits of modular
construction for green building, the Modular Building Institute
recently commissioned a report that specifically aligned the
modular building industry with the Prerequisite and Credit
requirements imbedded in the United States Green Building
Council’s (USGBC’s) Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED™) building rating system1. The report particularly
looks at LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations,
applied to commercial construction, and LEED for Schools.

CARPET CARE
Walking on the Edge
For many schools
and universities, the summer months are the prime floor and
carpet cleaning season. Areas such as hallways, classrooms, and
meeting rooms that are difficult to close down because of the
amount of time necessary to clean them and their heavy use
during the regular school year are now freely available with
little or no use or foot traffic.
Astute facility managers are well
aware of cleaning patterns in their facilities. They know that
certain areas require more attention than others simply by how
they are used, where they are located, or the number of people
using them. Interestingly, another pattern that is also often
noted, in both light-use and high-traffic areas, is referred to
as pathway soiling. This is especially noticeable on carpeted
floors and refers to the gray or darkened area usually found in
the center of hallways or the key walkways into classrooms,
halls and other locations.
