        In January 2008, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) component of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings1 (LEED-EB) green buildings rating system. According to the USGBC, the system is aimed at managers and others “who wish to drive down operating costs while increasing the occupants’ productivity in an environmentally responsible manner.”

What’s Happening to Our Water?
        After escalating month after month, oil and gasoline prices in the United States started falling toward the end of the summer. This was actually a surprise to many oil experts, who believed climbing prices would continue.
        However, it appears that the fundamental law of economics—supply and demand—kicked in. According to CBS News, it was estimated that Americans drove nearly 10 billion fewer miles in May 2008 compared to May 2007. The state of Utah instituted a mandatory four-day workweek, mainly to cut down on the use of gasoline by state workers. Other U.S. government entities have begun programs to reduce gasoline use by 5 percent or more.
