E-Mon Submeters Help LEED the Way to Certification for Greener Healthcare and Educational Facilities!

No stranger to the green facility market, submeters are now moving into the school and healthcare arenas where their measurement & verification capabilities can help users obtain LEED certification points in a number of rating categories. This white paper discusses how submeters can be deployed to earn Energy & Atmosphere (EA) credits, along with other uses.

The first facility environmental rating system was developed in the U.K. by Building Research Establishment Ltd (BRE) in 1990. Known as the BRE Environmental Assessment Method, the BREEAM rating system inspired several spin-offs, including the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Since its establishment in 1993, LEED has moved into virtually every U.S. commercial, industrial and institutional building sector, including healthcare and education, and even down to the residential and neighborhood level.

Released in April 2009, LEED version 3 (v3), also called LEED 2009, poses increasingly stringent require-ments compared to previous revisions, including a 10 percent reduction versus ASHRAE 90.1-2007 for new buildings, as well as an Energy Star performance rating of at least 69 for existing facilities. The backbone of the measurement and verification (M&V) process required for LEED certification at every level is the electric submeter.
