Garland Introduces Modular Green Roof Technology

The Garland Company, Inc., a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-performance roofing solutions, has recently updated its eco-friendly GreenShield® vegetative roof technology to be more installation and maintenance friendly, by introducing easily movable, interlocking container modules that encapsulate the plant material and the underlying growth layers.

The GreenShield® Module system uses specially-designed industrial-grade 46-inch by 46-inch (1.17m×1.17m) modules that are molded with pallet channels (for fork-lifting) and drainage perforations. The pallet channels also serve as port ways for drainage and/or irrigation, and provide beneficial air flow to the root systems. When the GreenShield vegetative systems are paired with a waterproofing membrane from Garland’s premium StressPly® modified bitumen family of roofing systems, no additional drainage is needed.

The modules can incorporate any of the full complement of special lightweight soils, aggregates, filter fabrics, and attractive green-roof plants developed for the existing Garland GreenShield technologies, while allowing the flexibility of distinct plant media in each module. The GreenShield modules can be easily cut and shaped to any landscape setting, and sprinkler heads can be cut into the modules wherever they are needed.

Tom Bauer, Garland product manager and LEED accredited professional, explains, “GreenShield Module systems retain all the benefits of green roofing – UV and heat insulation, reduced rainwater run-off, noise reduction, membrane protection, earth/air friendliness, and beauty. Plus they can be loaded up with attractive plant materials that have been growing well in advance of the roofing job. Over the years, if there are any problems with underlying roof or the vegetation, you can just pull up the plants, do the necessary work, and re-set the modules back down again!”

The new GreenShield Module system is the latest innovation introduced under the Garland Green House, which encompasses ENERGY STAR®* qualified roofing restoration systems that are highly reflective; restoration and adhesion materials that are VOC-free; self-adhering membranes that totally eliminate fumes, flames, and odors; and a wide range of roofing materials that reduce energy through the conservation of resources, the use of recyclable materials, the incorporation of recycled material content, or significantly extended life-cycle performance.
